Seven alternative uses for Post-it Notes

We’ve already seen how Post-it Notes can be used in the workplace. They are a tried and tested note-writing solution, used on a daily basis, both at home and at work.

However, there is a lot more to these stationery giants than you might think; they don’t just have to be used for writing reminders and to-do lists. Here are seven alternate uses for sticky notes that everyone should try for themselves.

1. Use the sticky edge as an alternative to tape

If you don’t have sticky tape to hand, you can use a Post-it Note as a handy stand-in. Cut off its sticky edge and use to hold things together, attach paper to your office wall, and so on.

2. Brighten up a drab space with wall art

Are the walls in your office or home looking rather drab? Use sticky notes to brighten up the place with a creative new design. Artists across the world have used Post-it Notes as their main material, creating intricate designs, animations and artwork.

In 2000, the 20th anniversary of the Post-it Note was celebrated by having artists create works using only sticky notes. One such work, by artist R.B. Kitaj, sold for £640 at auction, making it the most valuable Post-it Note on record.

3. Wrap the sticky edge around cables

Are you sick and tired of the seemingly impossible task of trying to identify a cable under your desk? Use different coloured notes as a tool for labelling the cables around your home or office. Simply cut off the sticky edge and attach to the start and end of your cable. Use different colours so that you know which cable is which. This helps keep things tidy whilst also preventing inevitable wasted time and stress.

4. Use the sticky edge to clean between the gaps of your keyboard

With research showing that many computer keyboards can indeed contain more bacteria than a toilet seat, it’s important to try and keep your keys clean. Those few millimetres of space located between the keys on your keyboard are home to many oddities. Run the sticky edge of a Post-it along these gaps to remove any dirt or dust. This will go someway towards stopping germs from spreading.

5. Stick a temporary ‘do not disturb’ Post-it sign to your door

If you have a tight deadline to meet or too much work to stop and chat, ensure that you have no distractions. Place a friendly, temporary ‘do not disturb’ Post-it sign on your door to stop people from intruding.

6. Make a label out of the sticky edge

Sticky notes make excellent, cost-effective labels. Create a filing system using different coloured notes by removing the sticky edge. This colour-coded system can help boost organisation by visually sorting the different aspects of your life.

7. Use a Post-it pile as a cup coaster

Are coasters a commodity in your home or office? No problem. Use a stack of Post-its as an affordable alternative. If a great idea strikes you whilst you’re having a cuppa, you know that you have a pile of Post-it Notes to hand to jot it down quickly.
