Seven Post-it Note campaigns that stuck around

Post-it Notes don’t have to be used just for note-taking and compiling lists; they are far more adaptable than that. This stationery icon has been used in a multitude of forms, particularly within the advertising and creative industries – testament to its versatile nature. Below are seven truly brilliant adverts and campaigns that really have stood the test of time.

1. The power of love and Post-it Notes

This stunning stop-motion animation used over 350,000 Post-it Notes to advertise the Melissa Gallery in Brazil. Taking the form of animals, people and abstract shapes, the Post-it notes seemed to come alive on the gallery’s facade. In an attempt to promote the Melissa Power of Love collection in 2012, it took 25 animators five months to create. The campaign received a lot of attention in the local area, with more than 30,000 spontaneous messages of love written on the notes by members of the public.

2. Post-its that give you a winning smile

Who knew Post-it Notes could be the perfect tool for accurately depicting plaque build up on our teeth? These Post-it pads were sent to dentists in an attempt to promote the benefits of the Oral B Pro-Health Whitening toothpaste. As the Post-its were used more and more they became gradually whiter, aptly portraying the product’s message: “the more you use it, the whiter your teeth get”.

3. The Will & Kate Post-it Note

During peak Royal Wedding fever in 2010, 3M posted giant yellow notes across London, wishing Will and Kate a long and happy marriage together. In an attempt to promote their new Super Sticky Post-it notes, the brand chose the appropriate message: “may you stick together forever”.

4. Stick to the speed limit with Post-its

First launched in 1998, this campaign was one of the first major road safety advertisements launched in Western Australia. The overall goal of the ad was to contribute to reducing the number of people speeding on Australian roads. Building upon the commonly perceived notion that Post-it Notes are used as reminders, the ad attempted to show how road safety should never be forgotten.

5. Kia’s customer reviews ad

Rolled out in 2014. Kia used Post-it Notes to show the huge number of positive reviews it had received from its customers. The campaign highlighted real customer comments and thoughts, displayed on handwritten Post-it Notes shown in the ad. The voiceover featured vocabulary taken directly from Kia customers, ensuring that it appealed to its target market.

6. Bald head sticky notes

This intriguing Post-it Note pad was used by Pantogar to highlight the problems many people face with hair loss. As users tear off Post-its everyday, the illustrated person’s hair becomes thinner and thinner, alerting them to possible hair loss. The notes inform the user to do something about the issue before it’s too late – the marketing message being that Pantogar hair revitaliser is the best solution.

7. How would you Post-it?

3M encouraged Post-it users to send in ideas of how they would use their notes. This campaign allowed the brand to engage with its wider audience, showing the true versatility of the humble Post-it Note, whilst also adding the potential for some humour.
