Post It Notes at Work

Seven uses for Post-it Notes in the workplace

Do you have hundreds of sticky notes hanging around your office or hidden under a pile of paperwork? You’re note alone – we’re all guilty of jotting down something for later and immediately misplacing it.

But what can the humble Post-it Note be used for, beyond writing reminders and to-do lists? Here are a few tricks you can try out for yourself.

Post It Notes at Work

 1. Post-it instead of an email

Got a time-sensitive matter for a busy colleague? Strategically place a Post-it Note on their desk. They are more likely to pay attention and respond to a handwritten note rather than another email sitting in their inbox.

In this digital age, handwritten notes are seen as more personal and show a sense of thoughtfulness on behalf of the sender. We are used to receiving countless emails throughout the day, so by handwriting a reminder instead, you are more likely to stand out from the crowd and get a response.

2. Use when copyediting or annotating

Instead of leaving intimidating scrawl all over a colleague’s work, why not use Post-it Notes? This ensures that the work is still easy to read, whilst also providing you with more space to leave constructive criticism. Try colour coding your annotations; use different coloured notes to symbolise different types of changes that need to be made.

3. Don’t lose your place

Use a sticky note as a disposable bookmark, to mark a particular section, page or article within a book, newspaper, or magazine. There’s nothing more annoying than trying to relocate a particular page in the depths of a thick book or magazine – this tip saves you a lot of time and stress.

4. Create an office wall planner

Different coloured notes can indicate different types of task, levels of urgency, and differentiate between employees. Sticky notes ensure a versatile planning system for your office, allowing greater collaboration and insight in terms of everyone’s day-to-day activities.

5. Create to-do lists at the beginning of the day

This will ensure that you know exactly what the day has in store for you, and will indicate how intense that day is likely to be. You can check them off as you go, then chuck them in the bin at the end of the day. Only write down the most urgent tasks you need to achieve. There is no point having a long list, as this can often be counterproductive and unrealistic.

6. Presentation aids

Stick important points from a presentation around the room when trying to memorise key information. The Post-its will act as visual aids and can be strategically placed in locations where they are going to catch your eye, for example on the ceiling above your bed.

7. Leave as a reminder

We’ve all experienced that horrible feeling first thing in the morning when you know you need to remember something but have no idea what. Make this a thing of the past. Before you go to sleep, purposefully stick a Post-it somewhere you’re not going to miss it, such as an alarm clock or door handle. Use as a reminder for anything urgent you don’t want to forget.
